The bulk of Richards Bay's shipping stats are from exports

A TOTAL of 9 534 775 tonnes of cargo was handled at the Port of Richards Bay last month, with exported bulk cargo making up the majority.

Almost 8.9-million tonnes of bulk cargo was exported from our shores, while 448 078 tonnes landed in the Bay.

Total breakbulk handled at the Port of Richards Bay amounted to 192 502 tonnes, 187 349 of which was shipped from our shores, with the remaining 5 153 tonnes landing on our shores.

Expressed in 6m units (twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs), a total of 567 containers passed through the Port of Richards Bay, 470 of which were full while 97 were empty.

Of this number, 405 full containers were shipped from the Bay, while 65 landed on our shores.

Topping the vessel arrival statistics for the Port of Richards Bay last month were bulk vessels, at 126 and a gross tonnage of 5 589 650 tonnes for the month.

Tankers were the next numerous, with a total of 17 for the month.

These consisted of eight oil, eight chemical and one LPG tanker.

Nine general cargo vessels, at a gross tonnage of 288 410 tonnes passed through the Port of Richards Bay, while only three passenger vessels arrived at our shores.

Six miscellaneous vessels, including five barges and one search-and-research vessel, passed through the Port of Richards Bay, bringing the grand total of vessel arrivals for February to 163 at a gross tonnage of 6 459 687.
