Mthonjaneni councillor awaits stock theft sentencing

THE sentencing of convicted Mthonjaneni Ward 7 councillor Mthokozisi Mthembu has been postponed to Wednesday, 14 March.

Mthembu was found guilty of 11 counts of livestock theft at the Piet Retief Regional Court in December and was scheduled to be sentenced last Wednesday.

In December, the court refused the extension of his bail application and he was remanded in custody pending sentencing.

Piet Retief regional police spokesperson, Sergeant Gerald Sedibe said Mthembu was arrested in Vryheid after a complainant had reported some livestock had gone missing.

‘An alert was circulated and the KZN police set up a roadblock. A truck carrying 11 cows was stopped.

‘He was arrested after the victim had identified his cattle.’
