Thief snatches pensioner’s handbag in supermarket

Apart from money, all 88-year-old Willie Tait's valuable cards such as her SASSA card, driver's licence and ID document are now lost and she is at her wits' end

A DESPERATE elderly Empangeni resident hopes the public can assist in retrieving her handbag which was stolen in a Sanlam Centre supermarket on Thursday.

Apart from money, all 88-year-old Willie Tait’s valuable cards such as her SASSA card, driver’s licence and ID document are now lost and she is at her wits’ end.

‘I couldn’t even buy a loaf of bread,’she said after the incident.

Tait said she hung her handbag on the trolley while packing groceries into it.

‘I didn’t even turn around for a minute to get something from a shelf when someone swiped the handbag.

‘When I turned around again it was gone, with all my cards and money I drew to pay my municipal bill.’

The distraught pensioner said she attempted to seek help from the supermarket’s security guards, but received little cooperation.

‘We did have a look on the security cameras and saw this boy snatching my bag and ducking around the corner.’

She kindly requests that if anyone perhaps finds her belongings to drop it off at the Zululand Observer offices in Empangeni at 3 Baines Road.
