A MAN accused of raping and hacking a woman with a machete, is expected to appear in the Mahlabathini Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for a formal bail application.
The 20-year-old suspect made a brief court appearance last week and was remanded in police custody.
Police spokesperson for the Zululand District Cluster, Captain Nkosie Gwala, confirmed the incident.
‘It is alleged that last Sunday the victim (40) was collecting firewood in the bush when the suspect approached her.
‘She refused his advances and when she returned home, he accosted her and raped her before hitting her on the back of her head with a machete,’ said Gwala.

He said the victim fainted and the suspect dragged her body to a nearby donga where he dumped her, thinking she was dead.
‘The victim gained consciousness and crawled to a nearby homestead for help where her family, who had been searching for her when she failed to return home, found her,’ said Gwala.
‘They called an ambulance and the police were informed.
‘On Wednesday police arrested the suspect and charged him with attempted murder and rape.’
