BREAKING: Double drowning at Richards Bay’s Naval Island

The incident comes just days after the ZO launched its festive season anti-drowning campaign

A TEENAGE girl is in a critical condition while a woman in her mid-thirties tragically lost her life today (Thursday) in a double drowning incident at Naval Island.

The incident occurred just before 4.30pm and Ice Medical Rescue was called to the scene by a member of the public shortly thereafter.

‘When we arrived, bystanders had already pulled the two casualties to shore,’ said Ice Paramedic Richard Schouten.

‘Sadly we had to pronounce the woman at the scene but the teenager was taken to Ngwelezana Hospital in a critical condition.

‘She remains in a critical but stable condition, with secondary drowning.’

This comes just days after the ZO and its partners launched a festive season anti-drowning campaign.

Pamphlets depicting the dangers of swimming in too-deep water are being distributed by taxi drivers to their passengers as they ferry them to Richards Bay’s beaches.
