Nkandla road safety promoted

Mayor prioritises safety first

‘THE safety of our people using public transport remains our top priority, and we commit ourselves to ensuring that rules of the road are adhered to by all.’

This was the promise of Nkandla Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Thamsanqa Ntuli, speaking to the media during last week’s road safety campaign, initiated by the rural municipality.

The campaign was a joint venture, involving the local municipality’s traffic officers, South African Police Services (SAPS) and provincial traffic officers.

Traffic flow was disrupted for about four hours at the busy P419 intersection, during a roadblock led by Mayor Ntuli and his team.

They were checking the road worthiness of all vehicles, in particular minibus taxis, and the legitimacy of drivers.

‘We will intensify this campaign as we approach the busy festive season.’

We don’t believe the festive season should be marred by road accidents.

‘People must obey the rules of the road, drive safely and abstain from drinking and driving,’ he said.

Ntuli also urged religious leaders to add their voices by praying for a peaceful and accident-free festive period.
