Abandoned daughter leaves mother fuming at care centre

Care Centre blamed for negligence

THE mother of a disabled woman is fuming after learning that her daughter was dumped on a stretcher at Ngwelezana Hospital outpatients department by a care centre.

To make matters worse, it is alleged she lay there all night in the cold, though this has been denied.

Victoria Mkhize (67) from Matshana Reserve has accused the Hammarsdale based Nobuhle Care Centre of negligence, saying they have shown little care for her daughter Thabisile Mkhize (45), who is epileptic.

Mkhize said she took her daughter to the Durban-based institution for better treatment, in August last year.

‘Little did I know they were going to do this to my daughter.

‘I am too old to take care of her, that’s why I took her to that centre, but I was shocked when the driver of the centre phoned to say they were on the way to drop her off at home on Sunday afternoon.

‘I told him there was no one at home, but he insisted he would drop her at my neighbours’ house and refused to wait for me.

‘I then agreed that she be dropped at Ngwelezana Hospital instead, as I had no other choice.

‘When I asked about the change of plans, they said the founder of the care centre had been involved in a car accident, so there was no one to take care of my daughter.

‘My view was that even if the founder was involved in an accident, other employees or care givers should be able to run the centre,’ she said.

Director for Nobuhle Care Centre, Nobuhle Dladla said they were forced to send all their patients back to their relatives, as she was still in hospital following the car crash.

‘We had an arrangement with Mkhize that we would bring her daughter back, but sadly she was not at home during that moment.

‘She then asked our driver to take Thabisile to Ngwelezana Hospital, of which he did, but he did not dump her on a stretcher. Our driver left her in a ward after she was admitted,’ said Dladla.
