Dispute over of P700 job opportunities

With about 9km left for the P700 road to be completed, Mthembu said residents believe that the construction of this road is now under Mthembu Clan jurisdiction, so they are the ones who should be benefit

CHAIRPERSON of the Business Committee of the Mthembu clan, Phiwe Mthembu is expected to write a letter to the local head of the Public Liaison Committee (PLC) concerning a dispute that erupted between them and the Biyela clan community over job opportunities during construction of Provincial Road P700.

Mthembu said their intention is to try and resolve the brewing tension between two tribes over who has right to get employment.

With about 9km left for the P700 road to be completed, Mthembu said residents believe that the construction of this road is now under Mthembu Clan jurisdiction, so they are the ones who should be benefit.

‘We have heard that Biyela residents argue that their jurisdiction ends at Biyela Centre in Empangeni CBD, which is not true,’ he said.

Mthembu alleges that the community is very upset about the latest discovery that their Tribal Council took a decision to allow residents from Biyela clan to carry on working even though the construction of the road section is under Mthembu jurisdiction.

‘We will be writing to the PLC head demanding to be part of their monthly meetings so that we can raise this issue with the hope of getting a solution.

‘At a meeting we had on Wednesday the community agreed that the remaining 15 people from kwaBiyela should carry on with their work but we want the contractors to start hiring people from our area going forward.

‘We want the contractors to create job opportunities for local residents, now not to hire anyone from outside. We do this to ensure that there is harmony between the clans,’ he said.

Chief Bonginkosi Mthembu confirmed they gave away 35 percent of job opportunities to the Biyela community.

‘It is not true that we took decision to betray our people, we reached that decision because the current contractors were already working with those

He explained that all contractors are given certain kilometres to work and after completing those a new contractor takes over.
