Warning to small business owners

Speaking to the ZO, Empangeni Station Commander, Brigadier Jeros Thango, said business owners sleeping on their business premises are becoming easy targets for criminals

POLICE have issued a strong warning to small business owners who sleep in their shops.

Speaking to the ZO, Empangeni Station Commander, Brigadier Jeros Thango, said business owners sleeping on their business premises are becoming easy targets for criminals.

‘We are seeing a common trend regarding tavern, tuck and spaza shop owners especially.

‘Not only is this an environmental health violation, they are easy targets, especially foreign business owners,’ he said.

Thango’s sentiments were in response to the recent spate of small business robberies in the area.

King Cetshwayo District Acting Municipal Manager Thanda Mnguni said such acts (sleeping at business premises) are in violation of the law.

‘From a health point of view a dwelling must comply with the National Building Regulations and Environmental Health Bylaws.

‘The sleeping in food premises is also a contravention of the regulations governing general hygiene requirements for food premises and the transport of food,’ she said.
