WATCH: South32’s main entrance closed as workers strike
The strikers affiliated to the National Union of Metal workers in South Africa (Numsa) downed tools on Saturday morning after failed negotiations between the employer and the union
More than 300 South32 workers at the Hillside smelter in Richards Bay have blocked the main entrance intersection with burning tyres and tree branches, preventing motorists from using the route.
The strikers affiliated to the National Union of Metal workers in South Africa (Numsa) downed tools on Saturday morning after failed negotiations between the employer and the union.
‘As of this morning, our members have downed tools because they are fed up with the boss’ attempts to rob workers of their hard earned increase,’ Numsa KZN regional chairperson Mbuso Ngubane said.
Among the workers’ demands is a 7.5% increase across the board.
‘For the lowest earners, that increase must be 8.2%,’ Ngubane said.
Police are on the scene and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
