Richards Bay learners among the top in astronomy quiz

Richards Bay Primary School pupils will soon go through to the provincial round of the AstroQuiz competition

FOUR Grade 7 learners flew the Richards Bay Primary School (RBPS) flag high when they finished joint first in the second round of the AstroQuiz competition.

Out of 24 schools, RBPS finished joint first, but second out of the four different venues.

The team, consisting of Mayhen Naidoo, Zoe Sepp, Avela Khumalo and Ghite Scholtz, is looking forward to round three later this month.

Funded, co-ordinated and managed by the SA Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), AstroQuiz is aimed at Grade 7 learners and based on themes around astrology.

The project aims at improving teaching and learning of basic astronomy in primary schools.

Its objectives include improving awareness, interest and understanding of basic astronomy; building appreciation of South Africa’s history of astronomy, and recording and celebrating the participation of women in astronomy.
