Empangeni Child and Family Care in dire straits

The NGO has around 100 children in foster care and supports families from various communities in and around Empangeni

ON the verge of permanently shutting their doors, Empangeni Child and Family Care (ECFC) is pleading with the public for help.

The Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), which provides social services that include finding foster homes for orphaned and abandoned children, says it is in desperate need of donations.

‘It could be a month or two from now, but we are very close to being forced to shut down, and that is why we are appealing for donations.

‘We are not doing well at all, and are in desperate need. Any type of donation will make a difference, to prolong the life of this NGO,’ said ECFC member Nombulelo Mbiko.

The NGO has around 100 children in foster care and supports families from various communities in and around Empangeni.

‘We provide screening of families to determine whether they are fit to foster the children before we place them in those homes. We also do poverty alleviation programmes, where we hand out food parcels to families in need.

Another of our services is to conduct parenting programmes and assist people with parenting plans and provide HIV/Aids counselling.

‘Everything we do is for the good of the community and the funds or small donations we get, we give to those in need. Unfortunately we don’t receive any major donations, that is why we are appealing for assistance from the community at large, said Office Manager Hlengiwe Phakati.

In order to raise funds, the NPO is hoping to hold a jumble sale through donations from community members.

‘We are asking for anything that people can donate. It could be clothes, toys anything that can make an impact,’ Mbiko said.

For the organisation to be able to support those in need and find homes for orphaned children, ‘we need manpower, we need help’, Mbiko added.
