Man waits for over a year for disability grant

After depending on handouts from his neighbours for many months, they have grown tired of helping the now destitute Mthembu

THEMBINKOSI Mthembu (42) has been sent from pillar to post for over a year by a South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) doctor, to enable him to apply for a disability grant.
Now Mthembu, of Mnqobokazi Village in Hluhluwe, is feeling the pinch and often goes to bed with an empty stomach. After depending on handouts from his neighbours for many months, they have grown tired of helping the now destitute Mthembu.
Speaking to the Northern Eyethu, Mthembu said life hasbecome so difficult for him, he doesn’t know
what to do as he is unable to work.
‘I became disabled in 2013 after falling ill. I applied for and received a disability grant from late 2015, but this was stopped last year. ‘I have been trying to reapply for it ever since, but all my attempts have failed,’ said Mthembu.
A spokesperson from Sassa promised to contact Mthembu and hear from him what really happened. They promised to then work on his case, and assist him.
