Cat sterilisation project launched

Project Zulu Cat was launched on 1 June after the joining of Mtunzini Cat Rescue and Isizinda Cat Project

THE amalgamation of two volunteer-driven cat sterilisation projects, Mtunzini Cat Rescue and Isizinda Cat Project, has given way to Project Zulu Cat which focuses on trapping, sterilising, inoculating and re-releasing our region’s feral cats.

‘We trap, neuter/spay, inoculate and ear tip – for identification purposes – feral cats and then release them back to their outdoor home to live out their lives,’ said Project Zulu Cat co-founder Heilke Ackerman.

‘We have managed to get local veterinarians on board to assist us with sterilisation and would like to express our thanks to Dr Craig Pryke of Mtunzini Veterinary Hospital and Dr Pierre Singery of Meerensee Veterinary Hospital.’

On average, the project has been sterilising up to five cats each week, depending on successful trapping.

A volunteer-run initiative, Project Zulu Cat relies on donations and fund-raising and will gladly accept donations of blankets, towels or fabric, tinned sardines in tomato sauce to bait the traps and cat food to assist caretakers with feeding the cats once they are released.

Project Zulu Cat will be running numerous sterilisation campaigns in the near future.

‘If anyone wants to contact us about feral cats in their area, or would like to get involved with our project, please mail us at pzulucat@gmail.com or visit our Facebook page, Project Zulu Cat.’
