Gritty Sihlangu overcomes peer pressure

'Never let your background determine how far you go in life'

ONE of the University of Zululand’s top achievers, Nkateko Sihlangu, did not allow peer pressure to deter her from obtaining her Bachelor of Education degree.

The 22-year-old who graduated at the institution on Monday, said she never allowed negative influences to derail her from her course.

‘During my degree studies, I had friends who had different interests (from mine). Some fell pregnant and some dropped out. I had to resist all that peer pressure and study hard, especially because I come from a poor background. Both my parents are not working,’ said Sihlangu.

Sihlangu’s hard work and determination landed her on the list of top achievers, with a 75% average and 24 distinctions under the belt.

‘I’m very excited. I didn’t expect this,’ said Sihlangu. ‘With hard work, things turn out well.’

She is, however, no stranger to achieving high marks as she passed matric with a B average and three distinctions. She was also crowned the best student in her district in geography.

Sihlangu encourages students to focus on their studies.

‘You need to love studying. Also, stick to your dreams, dedicate yourself and never let your background determine how far you go in life,’ she said.
