WATCH: Bus depots undergo safety checks ahead of Easter holidays

An unannounced visit by the KZN Department of Transport to Richards Bay bus depots went ahead on Friday as part of a national road safety campaign

AS part of the provincial Department of Transport’s Easter road safety campaign, two Richards Bay bus depots were visited on Friday by the department and Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda for an unannounced bus inspection.

‘The inspection of buses in depots will be rolled out throughout the province at all major bus companies as part of promoting safety of the commuters and other road users during the holidays and beyond,’ said the department’s Communications Officer Kwanele Ncalane.

‘The inspection involves checking brake systems, other defects and the general roadworthiness as the majority of these buses will be contracted to transport congregants for the Easter service.’

Along with provincial inspectors, Kaunda inspected the buses at Ikhwezi and Sihlangene depots, the two major operators in Richards Bay.

Mxolisi Kaunda (KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison) was shown the company’s maintenance and service records and protocols by Ikhwezi co-owner Sol Paruk

Ikhwezi co-owner Sol Paruk and Workshop Manager Sagren Naicker walked the MEC through the company’s rigorous maintenance procedures and workshop, with which MEC Kaunda was satisfied.

‘All Ikhwezi’s buses are subject to strict maintenance protocol, with all of our 130 buses inspected and serviced every week,’ said Naicker.

‘Maintenance rosters are recorded on job boards and all information fed into the computer system which records all information, including buses’ mileage, service records and service history.’
Kaunda said he was satisfied with what he has seen.

‘I am satisfied that these depots are carrying out their duties appropriately and that the safety of the community and bus passengers is not at stake.’
