Parents demand action over sexual abuse allegations

Parents protest over claims of teacher alleged of sexual abuse

A GROUP of parents held a demonstration outside Richards Bay Secondary School (RBSS) in Brackenham on Monday morning, demanding the immediate dismissal of a teacher they claim sent texts of a sexual nature and nude pictures of himself to a minor learner.

Known as the ‘Parent Community Group’, the angered community members congregated outside the school at about 7.30am waving posters and placards condemning the alleged incident and calling for him to be removed from the school.

The parent group was led by Nicole Singh who said the learner’s family are in fear of being victimized and have not opened a case, but owing to the safety of other learners they presented a memorandum calling for immediate action to be taken against the teacher.

Ward 26 committee member Phillip Stainbank who was called to intervene and mediate on behalf of the community, presented the information comprising social media conversations and nude pictures, to the school management and school governing body (SGB) representatives in a closed meeting.

The SGB and school management reviewed the information and took a decision to suspend the teacher while the matter was to be investigated, however he opted to tender his resignation with immediate effect.

No criminal case has been opened at the Richards Bay SAPS.
