You too can help save the SPCA

Some local businesses have pledged to support the Richards Bay and Empangeni SPCAs, and we are appealing to others to join in

IN the midst of our the SPCAs’ biggest food and financial crisis, some local businesses have stepped up to help save the organisation.

Following reports of the Richards Bay SPCA being on the verge of closing its doors owing to a lack of funds and drastically low food stocks, local businesses, including Salon Images and Anna Muis Nursery School have pledged their support.

‘For every cut and blow dry, as well as every full set of nails, R10 will be donated to the SPCA,’ said Chantelle Bower of Salon Images in Richards Bay.

The salon is also a drop-off point for those wishing to donate food to the SPCA.

Anna Muis Nursery School has also pledged its support, and is also a drop-off point for food donations.

The ZO is also joining in, and its Empangeni and Richards Bay offices are further drop-off points for SPCA food donations

Place a helping advert

Those businesses wanting to advertise their services from which SPCA donations will be made, can contact Minette Knight on supplements@zob.co.za.

The ZO will donate 5% of the cost of all these adverts to the SPCA.

We are appealing to more businesses, in both Richards Bay and Empangeni, to join this drive to help keep our SPCAs afloat.

There is a huge number of animals, both stray and abandoned, passing through our SPCAs’ doors everyday.

With no regular municipal funding for the last five years and a monthly running cost of R150 000, the SPCAs have been reliant on public and corporate donations and sponsorship.

This is a crisis situation, with the Richards Bay SPCA’s depleted food stocks due to last only a few days.

Pick ‘n Pay Meerensee is also a food collection point, but those wanting to donate can also drop off directly at the SPCAs.

People are reminded that the SPCA needs hard and soft food for both dogs and cats, as the very old and very young animals cannot eat the hard food.

There are also chickens and tortoises in the SPCA’s care, so donations of chicken feed, as well as fruit and vegetables, are also welcomed.

Currently the Richards Bay SPCA has two inspectors’ vehicles, but they require a third so they can cover a larger area.

With no funds to buy another vehicle, a sponsored one would be most welcome.
