Farm attackers in court

Judgement has been set for 3 March in the Mtunzini High Court

THE Mtunzini High Court heard closing arguments on Friday relating to the Inyoni farm attack of 2 June 2015.

In the ambush-style attack, Inyoni farmers Peter Johnson died in a hail of bullets and his brother Ian was seriously injured.

The accused, Thandiwe Cele, Nana Madikane and Sabelo Zulu were refused bail and have been in custody since their arrests in June that year.

Judgement has been set for 3 March in the Mtunzini High Court.

Peter was shot in the chest and, despite being shot in the face and foot, Ian and his wife Cheryl barricaded themselves inside the farm office from where Cheryl called for assistance.

Local farmers responded to the call.

Farm attacks continue

Meanwhile, farmers throughout the country remain under threat.

Thirty farm attacks, in which 11 people were brutally murdered, have been recorded in South Africa since the beginning of February.

Last week alone five people were murdered in a 24-hour period in two separate attacks in Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

Two KZN farmers were killed in the Underberg area.

‘How many more people will have to lose their lives in this country before something decisively is done?’ said Ian Cameron, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety.

‘It is not only farmers who are being attacked. Farm workers are just as vulnerable.’

Earlier this month Ernst Roets, AfriForum’s Deputy CEO, said he was pleased with the outcome of a meeting with Acting Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Kgomotso Phahlane, who is showing greater willingness with regards to taking farm murders and farm attack figures into consideration when reporting crime.

It is hoped that this will lead to more involvement in the prevention and investigation of these crimes.
