Zululand icon Dave Whittaker dead at 63

Heartbreak as pillar of Zululand community dies suddenly in early hours of Monday morning

ZULULANDERS woke to shocking news on Monday as word spread that Dave Whittaker, a true pillar of the Zululand community, had passed away.

In an emotional Facebook post, his wife Cheryl confirmed that Dave had woken her at around 2am after he had experienced pain in his chest and arm.

With the assistance of their son Steven, he was taken to Life Empangeni Private Hospital where sadly, his condition deteriorated very quickly.

He was pronounced dead at 3.33am.

Dave has served the community of greater Zululand for nearly all his life, most recently as chairman of Business Against Crime and chairman of the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

A prolific crime fighter and former SAPS member and former Fire Chief, he constantly shared helpful information on social media and was actively involved in crime fighting initiatives in Empangeni and Richards Bay.

‘The sister came out of the room and told us how sorry they all were and that CPR was not working,’ wrote Cheryl.

‘We lost our legend, the man who kept our family protected and grounded. I have lost my precious husband, soulmate and best friend. The boys have lost their special Dad. Rest in peace our precious, precious Super Dave.’

Dave is survived by his wife Cheryl, sons Steven, Justin and Chris and three grandsons.
