Death by mob justice in Bay

Two murders in shopping centre parking lots since Saturday

ONE of several alleged sticky-fingered drug users at the Richards Bay taxi rank died after being assaulted by a vigilante gang determined to execute mob justice on Tuesday morning.

He was one of three individuals chased from the rank to a parking lot in the CBD shopping precinct, where between 12 and 15 men caught up and allegedly beat them with pipes, sticks and sjamboks.

Others were also pursued by the mob but escaped by scattering in various directions.

According to bystanders, the assailants recovered stolen cellphones and purses from the victims and fled before an IPSS Rescue ambulance arrived at the scene.

IPSS rushed the injured to the eNseleni Clinic, where one succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Wednesday.

Meerensee lot death
Another man was murdered in a Meerensee shopping centre parking lot at 11pm on Saturday night.

For reasons not yet known, the 26-year-old victim was stabbed in the chest by a minor, who after confessing the crime to his parents was handed over to the Richards Bay SAPS on Sunday.

He appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s court on Monday morning on a charge of murder, but was released from custody owing to his age.
