UPDATE: Who killed Sbongiseni?

Victim was due to make a witness statement at the police station the day he was gunned down

THE callous killers of Richards Bay resident Sibongiseni Msimang are still on the loose.

The 32-year-old victim died in a hail of bullets while driving down the John Ross Parkway close to the Arboretum robot intersection at about 9am on Monday – ironically, World Trauma Day.

Occupants of an overtaking vehicle discharged 12 shots at the driver from close range, with five of the 9mm bullets striking their target.

Sibongiseni lost control and his vehicle plunged into the bushes on the roadside.

He leaves his wife, Siphelele and their 11-month-old son.

Siphelele, who was soon at the scene of the shooting, said on Wednesday the attack had come as a totally unpredicted shock.

‘I had absolutely no reason to believe someone might do such a deed.

‘It still hasn’t sunk in properly. All I ask is that you all pray for us at this difficult time,’ she told the Zululand Observer.

Her sentiments were shared by Sibongiseni’s uncle, Bhutiza Msimang.

‘Sibongiseni was a fine, upstanding young man who never got into any sort of mischief making.

‘I am stunned; I don’t know what to say; I am scratching my head,’ said Bhutiza.

‘He was so humble and down to earth, never involved in any trouble.

‘All of a sudden he is gone. I would rather it was me.’

According to Bhutiza, his nephew was to have made a witness statement that day at the police station, related to an unspecified crime.

The family expressed their appreciation to the many community members who voiced their condolences and support on social media.

‘Many all over South Africa have grieved with us. We sincerely hope that the law will take its course.’

The funeral service will be held in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

Police meanwhile, are following possible leads and have asked any person who might have witnessed the drive-by shooting or may have any other relevant information, to make urgent contact.

Call Capt Mkhabela on 083 9225588 or investigating officer Const Fakazi on 035 9012416 or 035 9012405.
