UPDATE: German couple perish in Jozini plane crash

Names of victims not yet released by officials

TWO people believed to be a German couple on holiday, died in the small aircraft crash near Jozini yesterday afternoon.

It was initially reported that three people died.

The Zululand Observer visited the scene and was present when investigators found documents identifying the plane, a European Union passport as well as a German-issue pilot license.

It is believed the plane, a chartered Piper 28-235 Cherokee, had taken off from Pongola and was headed to Brakpan where the plane was originally hired.

The wreckage is scattered over an area of approximately two kilometers.

The main fuselage of the plane was found just meters from a house and had caught fire.

Empangeni SAPS Search and Rescue officers as well as a forensic technician from the Local Criminal Records Centre were dispatched via helicopter and have facilitated the removal of both bodies to the Ubombo mortuary.

Civil Aviation Authority investigators arrived at the scene at around 11pm last night and will begin their investigation today.
