New name proposed for War Memorial Hospital

LUWMRH was so named in commemoration of the heroes of the First World War

THE City of uMhlathuze executive council has approved the renaming of Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Regional Hospital (LUWMRH) to Queen Nandi Hospital.

This follows the renaming of the district from uThungulu to King Cetshwayo District.

LUWMRH was so named in commemoration of the heroes of the First World War after its humble origins as a three-roomed wood and iron shack in the backyard of Dr Moberley’s home in 1912.

The names of the men from Lower Umfolozi who died during the war are commemorated on a plaque.

Today the hospital, which is currently undergoing substantial upgrades, is known as a ‘mother and child hospital’, catering for the mothers of the district.

In a unanimous decision the Department of Health and the city Exco agreed that Queen Nandi would be a fitting name for the facility considering its purpose.

Queen Nandi was Shaka Zulu’s mother.

Other proposed names under consideration were Thandiwe Mkhwanazi Hospital, Nelson Mandela Memorial Hospital and Imbeleko Regional Hospital.

Uthungulu DOH will now send the proposal to the KZN MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, for his consideration.
