Mthandeni ready for the role of Shaka

Death of the Emperor Shaka set to change the Zululand entertainment scene

Working closely with television giants Connie and Shona Ferguson of Ferguson Films was just a beginning for Mthandeni Mbambo (31).

Now this Ngwelezana-born actor and dancer is ready to showcase his craft in his hometown in a full theatre production, Death of the Emperor Shaka, in Empangeni on Friday, 04 November.

This emerging actor was selected to play the lead role of King Shaka several months ago, and has since started preparing for the exciting role.

‘It’s an honour to have been chosen for this part. We all remember the role of Shaka as portrayed by the late Henry Cele, and to be asked to fill his shoes is a dream come true,’ said Mthandeni.

Death of the Emperor Shaka is a full theatre production about historical moments between 1827 and 1828.

The story highlights Shaka’s love for his mother Queen Nandi, and how her death affected him – leading to the conspiracy to assassinate the King.

‘It’s not your typical Shaka Zulu story, but rather focuses on him as a human with feelings. The love for his mother showed he was not all what is written in story books,’ he said.

Mthandeni is definitely no stranger to theatre and television.

He has an overflowing bucket of accomplishments and has worked in many TV and theatre productions.

He was recently selected to be part of Mbongeni Ngema’s Sarafina production, which is set to tour the world next year.

His appointment followed another international musical, Afrika My Home, which toured several countries.

In the musical he was a forefront narrator, alongside Mondli Makhoba of Uzalo and Abdul Khoza of the Mzansi Magic telenovela, The Road.

He also made an appearance on the Mzansi Magic telenovela Rockville.

‘I love theatre more than television, and I am thrilled they thought of me to be part of this huge project,’ he said.

Catch Mthandeni alongside other big names at the Empangeni Civic Centre on Friday, 04 November at 7pm.
