Jozini municipal deadlock holds repurcussions

ANC councillors failed to attend Friday's meeting, meaning no progress could be made

ALMOST a month after the local government elections, the balance of power at Jozini Municipality remains deadlocked.

The result is that both Jozini and the uMkhanyakude District Municipality will almost certainly be controlled by Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) administrators from this week until by-elections are held.

On Tuesday the municipality again failed to elect its leadership as a result of the 20-20 deadlock between the ANC and the IFP and it was decided the council should meet again urgently on Friday to find a way forward.

ANC councillors failed to attend Friday’s meeting, meaning no progress could be made.

The ANC councillors also disappeared on Tuesday after requesting a 10-minute caucus break.

Jozini Municipality’s failure to elect its leadership means that the uMkhanyakude District Municipality would also not be able to finalise its list of administrators because both the ANC and the IFP have to elect councilors to represent them in the district.
