Blaze razes iMfolozi reserve’s tourist hub

The Centenary Centre is a popular spot for the thousands of visitors who visit the game park every year.

HLUHLUWE-IMFOLOZI Park officials are counting the cost after a fire razed a large part of the Centenary Centre tourist facility on Saturday.

Park authorities were hard pressed to fight the blaze that left the Magqubu Ntombela Auditorium in ruins, a battle that started at around 7.30pm and continuing well into the early hours of Sunday morning.

The thatch roof of the building left large piles of smoldering ash which constantly flared up again.

Officials did well to contain the fire, believed to have been caused by an electrical fault, stopping it from spreading to the museum and restaurant, ablution block and art centre.

The Centenary Centre is a popular spot for the thousands of visitors who visit the game park every year.

The auditorium, named after legendary field ranger Magqubu Ntombela, a close friend of Dr Ian Player, was used by HiP for presentations and meetings.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo said he would inspect the site yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, following which more details would be made available.
