Coal terminal unveils R49-million lab

The modern 2 203 square metre facility is more than twice the size of RBCT’s previous laboratory and will support efficient coal preparation, sampling and certification.

THE Richards Bay Coal Terminal will boost its coal sampling turnaround time by a whopping 25% thanks to its new R49-million state-of-the-art on-site laboratory.

It was built in partnership with a leading sampling service provider, SGS South Africa.
Speaking at the opening, RBCT CEO Nosipho Siwisa-Damasane expressed her excitement with the ‘word-class coal sampling lab’.

‘When two giants meet, great things happen!

The modern 2 203 square metre facility is more than twice the size of RBCT’s previous laboratory and will support efficient coal preparation, sampling and certification.

‘The current design capacity of the terminal is 91 million tons (mt) per annum and this new lab is designed to handle 110mt per annum,’ said Siwisa-Damasane.

‘The workload demand has necessitated the increase of space.’

SGS SA Chief Operating Officer Fred Herren said the laboratory sets a new benchmark as far as coal sampling is concerned.
‘We want this lab to be a showcase. Special emphasis had been placed on new technology and a high quality of execution.’
