New captain at the helm at Unizulu

Professor Xoliswa Mtose appointed new Unizulu Vice Chancellor

THE University of Zululand (Unizulu) is now under a new stewardship following the appointment of Professor Xoliswa Antoinette Mtose as the institution’s new Vice Chancellor last week.

Mtose has permanently taken the helm after she temporarily sailed the ship following the departure of the former Rector, Prof Fikile Mazibuko in 2014.

She is the university’s seventh Vice Chancellor and a third black female leader since the university was established in 1960.

Last Wednesday, the University Council recognised her outstanding leadership skills after she successfully steered the institution through some difficult times, especially student protests.

Mtose is a well known international academic with, among others, qualifications from Harvard University in the US.

Over the years, she has climbed the ladder of success and moved up the ranks.

She started her career as a lecturer at Rhodes University in 1996, and than became Dean at the Faculty of Education at the University of Fort Hare in 2009.

In June 2013 she moved to the University of Zululand as Dean of the Faculty of Education.

Soon after, she was appointed as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, and then took the role as Acting Vice Chancellor.

‘On behalf of the Council, we congratulate Professor Mtose on her appointment and wish her well with her term as Vice Chancellor,’ said the University Council Chairperson, Cyril Gamede.
