Taxi road safety campaign launched nationally

The Road Safety campaign and Taxi Drivers Awards were officially launched nationally last week

THE local taxi industry initiative which includes a Road Safety campaign and Taxi Drivers Awards was officially launched nationally last week.

The campaign was introduced to the masses on the SABC 1 television talk show, Shift and on SABC 2 news programme, Morning Live.

This first ever initiative has captivated the nation, and is aimed at revamping the taxi industry and ensuring safety on the roads.

It was launched locally during eSikhaleni Awards in December last year, and was introduced to the uThungulu Region last month.

It focuses on educating drivers about customer care, road safety, and basic driving rules.

‘The awards honour hardworking drivers, rank managers, and associations for their contribution to society. We want to promote hard work, good ethics and professionalism in the industry,’ said innovator Lindiwe Dube, of North Coast Group (NCG).

This Sunday, the region held the second awards for the Ngwelezane Taxi Association in Empangeni.

Drivers were scored by daily commuters through a score system connected to public awards.

‘As drivers we are behind these awards because they will teach us many things including cleanliness, how to dress and to treat passengers with respect.

‘The fight for the top award will ensure that we stay grounded and follow road rules because we now know we are being judged.

‘We are ready to change the stigma regarding our industry, and show the world that we also professionals,’ said driver Thokozani Mntambo (30).
