Three practical tips to help make your online interview a success

Learn how to prepare properly for your interview to make sure you present your most professional self to your potential, future employer.

After living in pandemic mode for almost two years, online work life has become the new normal. The perks of not having to travel for meetings, budget for catering or pay exuberant office rental fees has made many companies think twice about returning to the office, even once the pandemic is over.

For this reason, it’s crucial to up your virtual interview game as Bizmod Resourcing suggests that most organisations find online hiring more practical. Try out these three tips:

Create a home office

You don’t want your dogs barking in the background, the cat walking over your keyboard or the kids screaming while you are busy with your interview. Find a quiet place, close the door to prevent interruptions and set up your device so that you have a clean background or choose a virtual background on your meeting app.

Test your tech

The last thing you need when you are stressed and nervous before a virtual interview is technical problems. Make sure your device is fully charged and your connection is good (check that you have enough data, if you aren’t using WiFi). Test the meeting link, as well as your camera and microphone. If you are doing a presentation, do a quick run through to check that it will all work seamlessly. It is always a good idea to do a mock interview with a friend beforehand.

Dress the part

Get dressed for your virtual interview the way you would for a face-to-face interview. Sure, you could get away with just wearing a smart blouse while you are still in your pajama pants and slippers, but dressing up will make you feel more professional and will help get you into work mode. Make eye-contact throughout the interview and engage with your potential future employer just as you would in an in-person interview.
