How to plan your next holiday

Use this quick checklist to guide you.

Even if you’re a seasoned traveller, planning a trip can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re juggling multiple destinations, people and activities!

These seven steps will help make sure you have all your bases covered.

Choose your destination

Do you want to explore somewhere local or head overseas? If you picture yourself on holiday, what surroundings and activities most appeal? Would you prefer to spend your days lazing on a sun lounger, hiking through the countryside or exploring cities rich in history and culture? Maybe you’d like to try a new adventure sport or party until dawn… Basically, work out where you want to be and what you want to see, and the rest will be relatively easy!

Research (everything!)

Get to know your destination in advance. Look into weather conditions and popular times to travel (peak seasons are best avoided right now) and make sure you understand any safety and security risks, including natural disasters. Plan a rough itinerary (always leave room for spontaneity!) and research how you’ll get around once you arrive.

Check your passport and visa requirements

If you don’t have valid travel documents, arrange these well in advance to avoid being impacted by unforeseen departmental delays. Most countries will require at least six month’s validity on your passport and at least a few pages free of stamps. You can find visa requirements online; alternatively chat to a travel agent or call your destination’s embassy or consulate.

Take out travel insurance

Do. Not. Skip. This. Step! Travel insurance may seem like an unnecessary cost, but it’s the only way to protect against cancelled flights and theft of your personal belongings. It’s also vital in the event that you get sick and need medical attention (ZAR doesn’t go far overseas!). Make copies of your travel documents and itinerary and leave them with a trusted friend or family member in case of emergency.

Book flights and accommodation

Don’t be tempted to wait for last-minute deals – especially if your travel dates aren’t flexible. Travel agents can help you find the best rates on flights and hotels, but you can also scour the web and use online services such as bookings.com and airbnb.com to find multiple options quickly.

Visit your GP or travel clinic

COVID-19 aside, some destinations require vaccinations for diseases such as typhoid and yellow fever. These should be done six weeks ahead of departure to ensure adequate protection. If you travel with prescription medication, it’s also a good idea to get a letter from your doctor explaining what you use and why. On that note, always travel with medication in its original packaging.
