Witbank Dam has dropped below the 90% mark.

Witbank Dam dips below 90%.

According to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) weekly state of reservoirs report issued early this week, Witbank Dam dropped from 90.5% to 89.9%.

The report also shows that the rest of the listed dams in the Nkangala District continued to record declines in water volumes.

Middelburg Dam dropped from 83.9% to 83.4%, Loskop from 92.4% to 91.6% and the worrisome Rhenosterkop from 7.7% to 7.5%.

The drop in water volumes in the listed dams in the Nkangala District reflects the continuing drop in water levels in the province.

The report further shows that the provincial water storage further dropped from 80.9% last week to 80.4% this week.

In the water management areas (WMA), the Olifants WMA dropped from 73.9%to 73.3% and the Inkomati-Usuthu dropped from 87.7% to 87.3%.

“DWS urges the public to continue using the available water wisely, sparingly and in a more conservative manner as the Spring season brings more heat leading to high water losses as a result of high evaporation,” said Mr Themba Khoza from DWS.

The department also encourages responsible water use to prevent the unnecessary loss of precious drops of water in this dry and water scarce country.
