Cousin disappears with car after wedding

The car was found damaged, and it looked as if he crashed into something as both front tyres were found damaged

A case of theft against a family member has been opened at Witbank Police Station after a vehicle was allegedly stolen after a family wedding.

Ms Portia Gumebe and her family live in Boksburg, and they visited her sister in Reyno Ridge on Saturday, April 10.

On the same day, they attended a wedding in Tasbet Park and after the wedding, they drove back to Reyno Ridge at around 22:00.

Gumebe’s husband asked his cousin who also attended the wedding, to go and park three of the vehicles at his grandmother’s place, also in Reyno Ridge.

Two of the vehicles were safely parked overnight and the third car, a Ford Fiesta was gone the following day. “We tried calling the family member who had to park the cars several times, but he did not answer,” Gumebe told the WITBANK NEWS.

Netstar Tracker was called so that Gumebe could get the location of the car, and they were informed that the car was in Zamokuhle, Hendrina. “My husband went with my brother to retrieve the car in Hendrina and upon arrival saw his cousin. He had three passengers and decided to speed off with the car when he saw my husband,” said Gumebe.

He was chased down the Hendrina/Arnot Road; he did not stop and continued to speed off. “My husband then stopped chasing him because this was becoming more dangerous for the both of them, and the other drivers on the road,” continued Gumebe.

Netstar was called again so that Gumebe could get information on the direction and whereabouts of the car, and they informed her that the vehicle was on its way to Belfast via the Carolina Road.

Netstar called Gumebe approximately 45 minutes later (this was around 11:30), and informed them that the car was stationary and was parked near a bush on the R33 Carolina/Belfast Road.

“My husband and brother then drove to that location, and as they approached, they saw the cousin kneeling trying to jack up the car, so he could change the tyres. He saw them driving towards him and the car, and he then ran into the bushes,” said Gumebe.

The car was found damaged, and it looked as if he crashed into something as both front tyres were found damaged. The entire body of the car was full of scratches and dents, and the plastic around the gear lever was loose. “It looks like he and his friends were trying to remove the tracking device.

Clothes and two handbags that were in the boot of the car were stolen.

The insurance was called and notified; they sent a tow truck to retrieve the car.

“A case of car theft was opened and the case is under investigation,” concluded Gumebe.
