Father Protas Linda Zwane book launch

“For as long as lions cannot write, the history as presented by the hunter will always remain the gospel truth"

Father Protas Linda Zwane launched his book: “Transformation in Black and White” a parish experience.

In his introduction of the overview of the book Mr Jabu Rakwena said:

“For as long as lions cannot write, the history as presented by the hunter will always remain the gospel truth that glorifies the hunter. It is thus important that we write and document our history, experiences and struggles for posterity and future generations. There is a saying ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’, but the truth of the matter is, we all do. The title may attract you to a book, especially if it fascinating. I remember buying a book titled ‘When God doesn’t make sense’. Today I can still remember the title even though at times the name of the author escapes me. My fascination was the title. At times it is the author that attracts one to the book. Most famous authors or individuals tend to have bestsellers merely by being well known. Give me any book by John Grisham and I will buy it without even reading the short overview. Others may be attracted by the layout on the cover. We all judge a book by its cover.”

Mr Rakwena said he was fascinated by the title of the book “Transformation in Black and White” and wondered what the title was telling us and what message was the author trying to convey to us. He described the book as non-fiction but a personal account of events that shaped and moulded the author to face and transform certain stereotypes and attitudes.

“It is not a biography, but perhaps a chapter in the biography. The author starts by his journey to set discovery and purpose in life. The influence of the book of Micah 6:8 had in establishing what his mission is. He further narrates and serenades us about how he grew up. Transformation is defined as a marked change in form, nature or appearance. But then, what is transformation? In an organisational context, transformation is a process of profound and radical change that orients an organisation in a new direction and takes it to an entirely different level of effectiveness. Unlike “turnaround” (which implies incremental progress on the same plane), transformation implies a basic change of character and little or no resemblance with the past configuration or structure, with the objective to heighten its efficacy and output.”

Mr Rakwena also noted that the author reminds us of the need to find ourselves. He calls it the Examen of Consciousness. He further alludes that this reflection is even more important in a country like ours, South Africa, where we are all at the frontline. He mentioned that we are trailblazers and we do not have a long experience to learn from those who walked this road before us. He said we struggle, rise and fall without tangible references to give us home grown guidance.

The book is about Father Zwane and his life experience and incidences that helped him transform first and prepared him for the challenges he faced later in his parish in Nelspruit and a personal transformation. Father Zwane also talks about change which is not easy and might cause conflicts.

“The author has regaled us with his story, his journey and a chapter of his life that helped contribute towards our greater social-economic struggle. Transformation is not the author’s journey to travel alone. Transformation is the business of all of us, black and white. What is your story? What is your chapter? What is your contribution?” asked Mr Rakwena.
