R4L2017 – paint your world purple

Paint your world purple was the theme of this year’s CANSA Relay for Life and that is just exactly what the community of Witbank – eMalahleni did.

Relayers spent the better part of 12 hours in all shades of purple, celebrating, remembering and fighting back in support of cancer victims and survivors.

This year’s annual CANSA Relay for Life kicked off from March 11 and spanned 12 hours to the morning of March 12 staged at Highveld Mall’s undercover parking.

Over 500 people took part in this year’s CANSA Relay for Life with 35 teams entered and 40 survivors and caregivers taking to the track in the fight against cancer, one step at a time.

Together the teams of 2017 completed a total of more than 1 600km during the 12-hour walk.

“Although Relay for Life is not an athletic race, we would like to thank the community of Witbank, who literally took the challenge and showed solidarity with all fighting this battle,” said Andries du Preez.

Relay for Life is the biggest global cancer awareness campaign giving communities the opportunity to walk overnight in solidarity with cancer survivors, a well planned, organised/emotional event indeed.

This year’s 2017 CANSA Relay For Life Witbank – eMalahleni Hero of Hope is none other than the inspiring Joey Viljoen, who is currently undergoing treatment for metastatic cancer.

Special thanks and congratulations go to Team Nienie for being the first team to enter as well as the team with the best team spirit. The top fundraiser was team Mama Lisa, and Cambridge Academy entered the most teams for this year’s Relay for Life.

“A special Thank you to Nino’s Coffee Shoppe and Highveld mall for the Survivors function and for hosting a fantastic event,” said Andries.

CANSA Highveld would also like to thank the Witbank News for all their support towards the CANSA Relay for Life event, each and every individual, corporate, team, and partner that generated to the success of the 2017 event, thank you.
