Pensioners living life to the fullest

The highlight of their trip was a 50 kilometre three day paddle down the Orange River.

A group of retired eMalahleni residents and former residents canoed down the Orange River proving that age is just a number. This group of long time friends go on a yearly retreat either hiking, or seeing exotic sights.

This year’s tour led them through the Kalagadi, Augabies and Richtersveld National Parks. It is easy to forget that the Kruger is not our only National Park and for this group of friends they set out to discover the road less travelled.

The highlight of their trip was a 50 kilometre three day paddle down the Orange River. They slept in tents in the wild on the banks of the river and even hauled their own equipment on their canoes. A feat many people much younger would think twice before trying.

Their tour guide said that they were the oldest group he had ever conducted and apart from the odd case of falling in the river no serious mishaps occurred.

“The tour ended in Springbok with a visit to the nearby Namaqua National Park to see the magnificence of the flowers currently blooming in the park,” Mr Peter Rodgers said about the trip.
