A place to flip, fly and flow or shop

Street sport is exploding in popularity world-wide and Highveld Mall will play host to this vibrant culture with a skate and BMX park.

The main focus of the Back to the Streets event from July 12 to July 20 is to encourage and develop the skills of amateur skaters and BMX tricksters with some really cool prizes and a programme of competitions and amateur jam sessions, but there will also be opportunities to see a show team of professionals in action.

While the skate and BMX park will offer spectators a chance to see the nail-biting craziness of professionals like Adam Woolf, there will also be opportunities for amateurs to interact with those professionals and get some tips from them on how to execute and cool up their own tricks.

The 10-day action packed event presents top skaters with the opportunity to win cash prizes of R5 000 in both the BMX competition on July 12 and 13 and the Skateboard Competition on July 19 and 20.

You can’t try this at home.

Pro Ramps will be responsible for the construction of the park, which will be erected near the News Café entrance of the Highveld Mall Food Court using the Spur lawns and adjacent parking area.

The idea is certainly to offer enthusiasts an opportunity to test their balance and flow in the same space and over the same challenging obstacles used by the professionals, but even if you don’t know what quarter pipes, banks, jump boxes, rails, hubbas and half pipes are, the commitment of street culture to creativity and freedom of expression should make for an exciting spectacle.
