Leon is at the top of his class

Leon du Plooy currently holds the top position in his class after the second round of the South African National Drag Racing Championships.

The second round of the SA National Championships were held on May 1 at Tarlton International Raceway outside Krugersdrop and this time the weather kept to the weatherman’s promise as clear skies were seen throughout Worker’s Day.
In the first round Leon managed fourth place finishing at 8.59 seconds with an exit speed of 252km/h. This time round he cleared his old time by almost one tenth of a second.

Leon bettered his personal best which now stands at 8.51 seconds with an exit speed of 251.8km/h in his Turbo Extreme Clinic Nissan 1400 bakkie.
He claimed the win in the class eliminations, which in turn pushed him up the rankings giving him the top position according to the point standings for the two completed rounds so far.
Unfortunately for Mark van der Westhuizen, mechanical issues arose when his gear selector broke in his Jack Daniels Nissan 1400 bakkie. Unable to finish his runs, he placed on the bottom of the log in the second round.

Leon set an all-new personal best and claimed top position in the class eliminations.

In his previous run on March 29 he managed a 10.1 second run even though he had no fourth gear, due to his gear linkages on his third and fourth gear braking.
Michael Ludick didn’t compete alongside the Witbank Boys as he is still busy with a new clutch setup for his Ludick’s Bros BMW E30, having too much power under the hood, a new clutch needed to be fitted.
The drivers have roughly a month to get their rides into shape with the third round of nationals being just around the corner.
“I won’t be making any changes to my car just yet, I am happy with the way it is performing. I might fit a bigger turbo for the upcoming August event,” said Leon.

As for Mark and Michael, Leon believes they will both be ready come the third round of nationals which will take place on June 16, Youth Day with gates opening at 07:00 and a rain date set for June 26.
