Jan enjoys taking the roads less travelled

Jan Gouws is an established resident of eMalahleni and at the age of 64 years, he can tell you that it is never too late to start something new.

Six years ago he began riding all terrain vehicles and joined a team called Voor-en-toe that attends multi day rallies. The first rally Jan did was with his son-in-law from Carnival City to Balito Bay. The rally is an annual event organised by Family Adventures and aims to raise money for various charity organisations.

Since then Jan has done the four day rally three times.
“It is a really tough race through river beds, and valleys and mountains,” said Jan.
The team ‘Voor-en-Toe’ that rides these multi-day events together consists of 15 men and women.
Another event that Jan has done three times is the Tri-nations Rally which starts in Johannesburg and runs through Lesotho, then finishes in Mozambique the total distance is about 700km but only takes the riders two days to complete.
“The last 20 or so kilometres in Mozambique is the most difficult part because it is just sand. Sand dunes and stuff like that,” explained Jan. This year he is gearing up for his fourth year in the Tri-nations Rally that also aims to raise money for charity. There is a fair amount of training that goes into preparing for an endurance event like that.

Recently they have set out to revive the old Clewer Sands off-road track. Over the past few months they have renovated the grounds and fixed up the track.
Jan has spent many hours there working to inject life back into the off-road track.
Apart from his hobby as an off road adventurer he is an active businessman in eMalahleni and still enjoys his other pass time, hunting. He has been an avid hunter since 1979.

He is the kind of person that likes to keep active and enjoys the atmosphere of the trail and the companionship of his fellow riders.
