Yacht Club launches junior sailing program

Transvaal Yacht Club (TYC) hosted the J22 Keelboat Junior National Championships at Hartbeespoort Dam.

Over the weekend of June 14 to 16 Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club (WYAC) entered a team of four junior sailors under the age of 18 years from Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club, which included Joshua Johnstone, a pupil at Laerskool Kragbron; Cherize Lubbe from WH de Klerk; Mathew Clack and Douglas White who was the skipper.

The J22 yacht is 22 feet (7m) long and the juniors sailed under the guidance of a representative of the owner of the yacht.
Eight races were sailed over the three days, and the Witbank team finished in fourth position in one race, and in seventh place overall in the competition.

Representatives from yacht clubs in Durban, Cape Town, Vaal Dam, Germiston and eMalahleni competed in wind conditions which varied from light to gusts of 25 to 30 knots.

The Witbank team will be going forward next year to compete and in the meantime, junior sailing at Witbank Yacht Club will form an important part of the new sailing season, with experienced yachtsmen to coach and encourage all young people who are interested in the sport of sailing.

Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club wish to extend an invitation to schools to attend an information evening on July 30 from 16:30 to 18:00 with regards to starting a Youth Sailing Programme in conjunction with schools throughout eMalahleni.
