First professional boxing at Phola

History was made when the first boxing tournament was recently held at Phola.

ABC Camp hosted the first fight and it was supervised by Mr Solly Mastimela of Boxing South.

Boxing legend and promoter Paul ‘Sika’ Tshehla with Thabo ‘Pound for Pound’ Mnguni after his fight.

The tournament was opened with prayer and five amateur bouts opened the tournament.

First on the bill was Shaun Sindane of Phola against Lungile Mkhezane of eMalahleni and the fight ended in a draw. Jimmy Tshehla (eMalahleni) won on points against Njabulo Motha (Middelburg).

Anele Lubisi (Middelburg) stopped Mthokozisi Mashiane in round two. Sifiso Mahlangu (Phola) beat Sandile Sindane on points. In the last bout July Masuku (Middelburg) won points over Sifiso Mthiyane (Phola).

In the catch weight division Emmaul Mpakanyane (Bronkhorstspruit) faced Kallie Mkhwezane (Mhluzi) both boxers were up for the task with Emmanuel the more aggressive boxer. Kallie won points in the end.

In the second bout Khayalethu Mbedje (Gauteng) came against Mthobisi ‘Zebra’ Nkosi, both boxers seized each other in the first round.

Mthobisi took charge and took the fight to Khayalethu. In the second round Mbedje came in strong and in round three and four both boxers looked tired with Mthobisi winning at the end of the bout.

In the third bout in the welterweight division Xolani ‘SOG’ Mgidi faced Ntobeko ‘Again’ Makeleni, the fight was stopped by the referee in the third round.

In the fourth bout, the fight everyone was waiting for, Macsood ‘Hammer Jackson’ Sando faced Thabo ‘Pound for Pound’ Mnguni in the international catch weight division.

From the first round both boxers showed skill and attacked from the first whistle. In the second Sando looked and was taking the fight to Mnguni. In the third round Mnguni was the stronger of the two he was throwing punches left and right to the body.

Rounds four and five were even, both boxers were going for each other and Mnguni nailed it in the end, winning on points.
