Brett takes the win

eMalahleni’s Brett Cummings takes the win at this year’s first Namaqua African Rally, after spending five days on his KTM bike.

The Namaqua African Rally started on April 25 in Cape Town and finished on Saturday, May 3 in Cape Town at the V&A Waterfront.
Competitors came from all over South Africa, as well as the Netherlands and Botswana to race.

Brett posted the fastest time over the 263km stage on Thursday that started in Lutzville, 22km North West of Vredendal, and took about 60 starters to Nuwerus, a small town 16km South East of Bitterfontien before they headed back to Vredendal.

Brett finished a few minutes ahead of defending National off road champion, Kenny Gilbert (Yamaha) who had a great race until the mousse in his rear tyre collapsed and his tyre shredded.

By this stage Brett led Gilbert by just over five minutes and the battle would continue until the end.
Brett already held the lead from the Tuesday and kept it there until the final day, taking the win at the Namaqua African Rally.
“It was really cool, it’s a good starting point for other riders from South Africa to get into racing and format,” said Brett.
At the prize giving Brett was handed a trophy and a cheque for his win.

Brett is known as South African’s Iron Man at this year’s Dakar Rally when he competed in the Malle Motto Class for motorcycle riders and he finished second in this class and was 28th overall. This was his second Dakar Rally he has finished and he also won his entry into 2013 Dakar by winning the Australasian Safari in Australia.
