Pumas sink their teeth into the Lions

The Steval Pumas returned home with the win in their clash against Golden Lions in the Vodacom Cup over the weekend.

Steval Pumas racked in the points after putting 47 points up on the board against Lions’ 27 on Saturday, April 26 at Alberton Rugby Club.
The match was kicked off by Pumas JC Roos, who within the first two minutes put seven points up on the board. In the 16th minute Lions retaliated by scoring a try.

Pumas Hennie Skorbinski started off what would be a chain of tries for the first half as he put one down in the 23rd minute. Following in Skorbinski’s footsteps, Corne Steenkamp, Ruwellyn Isbell and Renaldo Bothma all scored tries in the 25th, 29th, 34th and 36th minutes of the game leaving Pumas with a lead of 38-5 against the Golden Lions.

The second half saw Lions looking to get back on the board, their efforts proved fruitful but were just not enough.
Stephan de Wit scored a try for the Lions shortly after the start of the second half, and Lions game looked like it was heading in the right direction as Ruaan Lerm scored in the 57th minute, followed by his team mate Hugo Kloppers in the 62nd.

Steval Pumas made a break for the line in the 72nd minute and was well rewarded, bringing Pumas score to 47. Lions once again replied with one of their own scoring a try at the hands of Ruhan Nel in the 77th.

The final and deciding try went to Reynier van Rooyen of Steval Pumas in the 80th minute and with four of seven successful conversions by JC Roos, Lions were left trailing by 20 points against the Pumas.

The quarterfinal match between Pumas and Western Province will take place at Mbombela Stadium on May 2, kick-off is at 19:10.
