Smoke and spinouts on the strip next week

Leon and Gerhard feel ready to rock at Tarlton.

The next round of the South African National Drag Race Championships is just around the corner. Motor-heads and adrenaline junkies can look forward to a display of power and control at Tarlton International Raceway on Monday, April 28.

Leon du Plooy is looking to improve on his previous runs after the mishaps during the first round. He lost and regained control of his Turbo Extreme Clinic Nissan bakkie in his first run, and in the second run he missed changing into second gear. This set him quite a bit back during the first round of nationals.

“My bakkie is ready for the second round of nationals. I changed the rear shocks, fitted a single methanol fuel pump and modified the rear suspension,” said Leon.

Gerhard ‘No-Limit’ Nel has recovered from his crash in the first round and has kept to his words: “I will build another front wheel, this time stronger and safer and I will break my old record.” Gerhard has built a new Nissan Langley, this time it’s a two-door and he aims to break his previous record of 10.4 seconds.

“We are hard at work with big modifications on the new Nissan Langley, the modifications include extending the wheel base and relocating the engine more to the front for better traction. We are also going to take up the boost and power with the new Toyota power-plant to about 450Kw at the wheels and with all that we should get the new Yellow Exa into the nine second bracket,” said Gerhard.

Mark van der Westhuizen will also be competing in the second round of the nationals in his Jack Daniels bakkie and aims to take podium along with Leon and Gerhard.

Be sure not to miss the next round of the South African National Drag Racing Championships which will take place on April 28 at Tarlton International Raceway.
