A soccer tournament to honour former Witbank Black Aces goalkeeper Cyprian ‘Mahala’ Maimane was organised recently.
The finals of the tournament were played at the Lynnville Stadium on Sunday, December 30.
The finalists were Sunshine FC and United FC.
Maimane thanked the organisers of the tournament for honouring him and he further encouraged young people to get themselves involved in the different sporting codes.
Unite had the upper hand in the first half of the match and in none of their attempts they shot over the bar.
Sunshine were not to be undone and they also had their chances and in one of the moves they failed to beat the United goalkeeper after they were awarded a place-kick.
Poor defending by Sunshine nearly led to United scoring an opener.
The game swing from one end to the other with Sunshine missing with a high ball with only the keeper to beat.
Sunshine were back in the picture with a shot could not do a follow up after the ball rebounded.
Sunshine were the stronger side with several attempts at goal.
Towards the end of the first half both teams scored to make the score at 1-1.
In the second half with new ideas the teams showed some committed and Sunshine had to come to the rescue after to stop a shot.
Both teams made substitutes but no positive results came.
As the game continue Sunshine gained the upper hand and invaded United goal mouth several times.
Sunshine scored an easy goal to make the final score 2-1 and took the trophy and the first prize.
Other prizes were also awarded for the top goal scorer, player of the tournament and the goalkeeper of the best tournament.
