Tete to fight abroad again

Zolani Tete is unlikely to defend his IBF super-flyweight title in South Africa and will more than likely fight abroad yet again.

The East London-born boxer won the vacant belt when he beat Teiru Kinoshita in Japan on Friday, July 18, and promoter Branco Milenkovic says Tete may look for a title unification fight.

Tete will now be in great demand, but won’t be able to fight in his own country because there was not enough money to stage an IBF title bout in South Africa.

The rand-dollar exchange rate was “making it all but prohibitive,” explained promoter Milenjkovic.

Tete won the IBF Fight of the Year award when he knocked out Juan Carlos Sanchez in a title eliminator in November last year.

The champion’s past four high-profile fights were all abroad. He made a big impression each time, whether fighting in Japan, North America or South America, and it seems that is the way it is going to continue.
