Domingo rules out three-spinners approach

South Africa coach Russel Domingo has effectively ruled out any chance of the Proteas playing three spinners in their upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka.

The ODI squad boasts three spin options, with Imran Tahir joined by JP Duminy, who is set to take up the off-spin role alongside his batting, while the uncapped Dane Piedt is also available.

However, Piedt is unlikely to start and it is likely that Tahir and Duminy will take up the spin duties, with Domingo saying: “Two spinners will be the way I suppose. One of the frontline spinners with JP will be our best call.

“We are fortunate that we are always going to play one frontline spinner and then JP as a part-timer but I see him as a frontline spinner. So we do seem to have both bases covered.

“The conditions will determine the squad but it is highly unlikely we would go with three spinners. I don’t think that is going to happen.”

The first of three ODIs is on 6 July in Colombo, and then a two-match Test series starts on 16 July in Galle.
