Els leads SA field at Congressional

Ernie Els will lead a field of four South Africans at the Quickens Loans National at Congressional County Club. The course is the venue  of Els' second US Open win back in 1997.

“It’s a very different course now compared to when I won there. Despite all the changes, though, this is still Congressional and it will always have the same good vibes, the same great memories from 1997,” Els was quoted as saying on his website.

“I feel like I’ve been playing pretty well for a while, but I’m not getting it all together and my results reflect that. There have been good phases of play, some good rounds, but not four good rounds in the same week,” he added, reflecting on his current season.

Els will be joined by fellow South Africans Trevor Immelman, Rory Sabbatini and Retief Goosen.

Tiger Woods will also retrun to PGA Tour competition at the event, the American has conquered the Congressional Country Club twice before, winning this event in 2009 and 2012.

Els has dropped from 27th to 56th in the Official World Golf Ranking this year and has missed six cuts in 16 events.

The ‘Big Easy’ who usually opts to play in Europe this time of year, as he feels it prepares him better for the British Open, hopes his choice of starting in the States will give him a much needed spark.
