Chippa to relocate out of Cape Town

Chippa Mpengesi has announced that his club Chippa United will no longer be based in Cape Town, but failed to confirm where the club will be relocating.

The Chilli Boys will feature in next season’s Absa Premiership campaign after they earned promotion with four games to spare to top the National First Division ranks.

Their automatic promotion sparked talk that the club may opt to take their games out of Cape Town, with negotiations for a move to Port Elizabeth having taken place.

Mpengesi admitted that the lack of support from the city of Cape Town and its government in their debut campaign in the PSL forced him to reconsider his options in their return to the Absa Premiership.

“Chippa is a team that always chases something. We’ve had three promotions and one relegation – our record speaks for itself.

“I thought this year I had to do things differently. Our challenge was to play in Cape Town- we were given a hard time with the City of Cape Town’s disaster management.

“I spent more than R4m upgrading these grounds because of the love of the game. I saw myself changing the face of Cape Town.

“There was a lack of support from our provincial government and a lack of sponsors. The wish from our side was to be out of Cape Town.”

He concluded by saying: “It was a question of which province would welcome us. There is a change and we are definitely moving out of Cape Town.”
